Hi all,

I'm Justin from the Netherlands with a question on sound isolation on walls.

Will I be able to directly screw a 2x4 stud wall to my exterior concrete walls when I am going to use glass insulation, genieclips, hat channels, 2x 12,5 mm drywall with Green Glue in between on those studs?

As I am not a construction expert I would rather mount the stud frames to the walls then create a free floating wooden box.

I understand the genieclip system decouples the walls and so creates a room in a room. Does it not?

Or do I have to use rubber wall achors to connect the studs to the walls?

Looks redundant.

I am building an attic studio for vocal & acoustic/electric guitar practice/recording.

And mixing demo songs in the box with two Yamaha speakers.

the room is 7 x 4 x 2,4 meters and is above the master bedroom on the third floor.

- 1 pitched (roof) wall
- 3 concrete brick walls. (one to the neighbours)
- floor made of armoured hollow bricks with a concrete top layer.
- Ceiling made of wooden joists

Outside traffic noise is constant at 55/60 db.

I've attached some pics below

I am thinking of building a 2x4 stud frame on all walls and in between the horizontal beams on the roofwall. And use Genieclips on all of them.

For the ceiling I want to put Genieclips directly on the joists.

For the floor I'm thinking of 10 mm QuitGround 375 Rubber Underlayment. I don't think I have the height for a floating floor. And I will not record live drums or bass cabinets.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers,

Justin

That's ok mate,

I'm learning about all this as i'm doing a build myself so can't comment on your post much, and had to google Genie clips as I am not building that way,

the only thing that sticks out to me is that 12.5mm plasterboard is usually deemed to be to thin so possibly you would be better off with 2 layer's of 15mm plasterboard,

Carl

Hi Carl,

I've read that too. Somehow 9 and 12,5 mm are the norm in Holland for plasterboard. I'll have a look at professional shops for that.

Cheers,

Justin

PS. Good luck with your own project

You should be able to get Fermacell in the Netherlands check it out as it has a good deal more mass than normal plasterboard!

Anywhere else one sees cases of beer stacked in the attic but only in the Netherlands will you see boxes of POT - and so many....

Hi Brihar,

You never asked what I need the attic to be isolated for

Yep Fermacell is a good tip. Thanks!

Cheers,

Justin
